The Overview

This project involved the complete replacement of the existing patio and pathways to create a natural stone scheme more in keeping with the character of the property and its surrounding landscape. The design introduces level changes, structured movement around the garden and carefully positioned feature details, transforming the space into a cohesive and highly usable setting.

The Brief

The client wanted a new terrace and pathway layout that would feel established within the garden while offering greater visual interest and clearer definition between areas. Natural materials, strong detailing and focal features were key to ensuring the scheme enhanced both the property and its rural setting.

Further Information

The main terrace was constructed in riven Indian sandstone and raised above the lawn and pathway level to create presence and improve the relationship between house and garden. A dwarf retaining wall in TBS Middleton Blend multi-stock brick was introduced to support the level change and visually anchor the terrace, its warm tones complementing the paving. A consistent border theme runs throughout the scheme, using sandstone setts and brindle block edging to frame the paved areas and introduce rhythm and structure. Additional linear sett bands were incorporated within the side passages to break up long runs and add character. To create focal points within the garden, a dedicated sun-lounger terrace was formed using sandstone setts laid at 45 degrees, giving it a distinct identity while remaining connected to the wider layout. A corresponding walkway from the lounge doors mirrors this geometry, reinforcing the sense of cohesion. Deep red porphyry steps were carefully sourced to link visually with the brindle edging, providing both contrast and continuity across the material palette. Pathways run around the full perimeter of the lawn, establishing a clear journey through the garden and encouraging movement between the different seating and viewing areas.

The Outcome

The completed garden offers a series of connected spaces unified by a disciplined material palette and strong geometric detailing. The raised terrace provides a natural focal point, while the surrounding pathways create a gentle, continuous route through the landscape. Carefully positioned feature areas introduce variation and encourage use of the entire garden, resulting in a space that feels both structured and relaxed, with a character that sits comfortably within its setting.
